1,Core Physical Property Assessment --- Heat and Moisture Resistance: Crucial for preventing deformation and cracking.
- Assessment Method: Prioritize kiln-dried wood with a moisture content controlled at 8–12%. Request a moisture content test report from the supplier. Test the wood's stability in a high-temperature (80–100℃) and high-humidity environment, observing for warping, cracking, or expansion.
- Rejection Criteria: Naturally dried wood and wood with a moisture content >15% are easily deformed due to expansion in humid and hot conditions and should be immediately rejected.
2,Low Thermal Conductivity: Ensuring user safety during use.
- Assessment Method: Place a wood sample in a 60℃ constant temperature environment for 2 hours. Touch the surface with the back of your hand. If the touch is mild and not hot, it meets the standard. Hardwoods with high thermal conductivity (such as oak and walnut) heat up quickly and can cause burns, making them unsuitable for sauna interior walls and seating.
- Reference Indicator: Wood density <0.6g/cm³ is better; lower density means weaker thermal conductivity.
3, Low Resin Content/Odorless: Avoiding the release of harmful substances at high temperatures.
- Assessment Method: Place a wood sample in a sealed container and heat it to 80℃. Smell the air inside the container. If there is no pungent resinous smell or other odor, it meets the requirements. Also, check the wood surface for resin knots; wood with knots will exude resin at high temperatures, polluting the environment and affecting the user experience.
- Key Requirement: No VOCs (volatile organic compounds) should be released at high temperatures. It must meet the EU E1 standard or the Chinese national standard GB 18580-2017 environmental protection standard.
Quick Elimination Method: These woods are absolutely unsuitable for making a modern indoor sauna room:
1,Hardwoods: Oak, walnut, mahogany, etc., have high thermal conductivity and high moisture content, making them prone to cracking and deformation under high temperature and humidity, and easily causing burns upon contact.
2,Untreated softwood: Ordinary pine and fir wood that has not been kiln-dried has a high resin content, releases unpleasant odors at high temperatures, and has extremely poor stability.
3,Wood containing chemical preservatives: Industrially treated wood containing preservatives releases toxic substances at high temperatures, endangering the health of users.
