The Main Types Of Indoor Saunas And Their Key Differences

Leave a message

Indoor saunas can be broadly categorized into three main types based on their heating principle and user experience: traditional steam saunas, infrared saunas, and hybrid saunas. Traditional steam saunas can be further subdivided into wood-fired and electric-heated types. These different types vary significantly in heating methods and user experience. Here's a detailed analysis:

Far Infrared Sauna

Traditional Steam Sauna

  • Subtypes:

1. Wood-fired: Uses burning wood to heat sauna stones, generating heat and steam. This is the classic form of traditional Finnish sauna;

2. Electric-heated: Uses an electric heater to heat sauna stones, generating steam when water is poured onto them. This is currently the mainstream type in commercial settings.

  • Key Features:

Provides a high-temperature, high-humidity experience. Wood-fired saunas can reach temperatures of 70-100°C, while electric-heated saunas typically range from 70-90°C, with humidity generally exceeding 80%. Wood-fired saunas create a classic atmosphere with the crackling sound of burning wood, but heating takes longer (45-60 minutes), temperature control is less precise, and regular ash cleaning is required; electric-heated saunas heat up faster (15-20 minutes), offer precise temperature control, and are easier to maintain, but lack the traditional wood-burning atmosphere.

  • Applicable Scenarios:

Wood-fired saunas are suitable for villas with gardens and high-end guesthouses seeking a retro experience; electric-heated saunas are widely used in hot spring hotels, spa centers, gyms, and other commercial establishments, and are also suitable for families who value the traditional sauna experience.

Infrared Sauna

This type of sauna is a modern, mainstream dry sauna. Its core technology relies on far-infrared carbon crystal panels and ceramic heaters to emit specific wavelengths of infrared light, which directly heats the body rather than the air.

  • Key features:

The temperature is mild, typically between 40-60°C, and the humidity is maintained at 40-60%, providing a comfortable and non-stifling experience. It has high heating efficiency and lower energy consumption than traditional saunas, is easy to install, and suitable for small spaces; simply plug it in and use it. However, compared to traditional saunas, it lacks the classic sauna atmosphere of high-temperature steam, and some high-end upgraded models are more expensive.

  • Suitable applications:

It is more suitable for home use, especially for the elderly, children, and those with cardiovascular sensitivities who cannot tolerate high temperatures; it is also suitable for commercial settings such as beauty salons and rehabilitation centers that require a gentle and comfortable wellness experience.

Hybrid Sauna Room

This is a new model that combines traditional steam heating with infrared heating technology, allowing users to switch between modes to meet different needs.

  • Key Features:

It combines the advantages of both modes, allowing users to switch to a high-temperature, high-humidity mode for a traditional sauna experience, or to a gentle infrared mode for soothing wellness. It offers a highly customizable experience. However, due to the dual heating system, the initial purchase cost is higher than single-type saunas, the structure is relatively complex, and maintenance requires attention to both systems, leading to higher after-sales service requirements.

  • Applicable Scenarios:

Suitable for high-end villas, boutique hotels, and high-end health and wellness institutions that seek diversified services and have sufficient budgets, meeting the diverse experience needs of different clients.

In addition, infrared saunas can be further subdivided by material into tourmaline, jade, and salt steam types. Their core heating principle is the same; the different functional materials simply add benefits such as skincare and respiratory relief. The differences mainly lie in the focus of the wellness benefits, not the core experience mode.
